Reddit Engagement: Why I Tell Brands to Keep It In-House

A client asked me a fair question last quarter. They had read all the research on Reddit driving AI search visibility. They were sold. And they wanted to know one thing: could we just run it for them?
I said no.
Then I explained why, and it turned into one of the better conversations I've had with a client all year. So I want to walk you through it here, because I think a lot of brands are about to make the same request, and I think most agencies are going to say yes when they should be saying no.
Here's the short version. Reddit is the highest-effort, highest-reward channel in the AI search mix right now. It's also the one channel where hiring someone like me to do the talking can actively hurt you. I run a digital agency. I'm supposed to want your business. I'm telling you to keep this one in your own hands anyway, because I've watched what happens when brands don't.
Reddit Isn't a Campaign. It's a Job.
Most of what I do for clients lets you build something, launch it, and check back later. You write the ad, set the budget, look at the numbers Friday. That's a campaign. You can hand a campaign to an agency and sleep fine.
Reddit doesn't work like that.
Threads are alive. A post about your brand can sit quiet for two weeks, then catch fire on a Tuesday afternoon and pile up 400 comments by Wednesday morning. If nobody on your team is watching, you're not in the conversation. You're the subject of it. There's a real difference between those two things, and you feel it the first time it happens to you.
That difference got a lot sharper recently. On May 6, 2026, Google announced that AI Overviews would start pulling direct quotes from Reddit and other forums, tagged as "Expert Advice" or "Community Perspectives" (Google Blog). So now a single comment buried in a thread can show up inside an AI answer, with the community name attached, in front of everyone Googling your category. The speed of the channel and the stakes of the channel went up at the same moment.
So what does keeping up actually take? Honestly, more than most teams expect:
Daily eyes on your priority subreddits, plus brand mentions, product mentions, and the adjacent conversations where your name comes up sideways.
Response time in hours, not days, when something starts moving.
Someone who actually gets Reddit. Knows the difference between r/sysadmin and r/ITCareerQuestions. Writes like a person, not a brand voice doc.
A simple internal rule for what you respond to, what you escalate, and what you leave alone.
A record of your accounts, comments, and disclosures, so you can defend yourself if a moderator ever comes knocking.
Look at that list again. Almost every line depends on context that lives inside your company. Product knowledge. Customer history. The standing to admit a flaw out loud. That's the whole argument, right there.
Why Handing Off Your Reddit Engagement Breaks
Plenty of agencies will gladly run your Reddit account. I think that's a mistake, and not a small one. Here's where it falls apart.
Reddit users can smell agency copy from across the room. The rhythm is off, the disclosures are clumsy, the answers feel like they're being billed by the hour. These are people who have been online for twenty years. They have a reflex for spotting anyone who's paid to be in the thread.
And when an agency gets caught posting on your behalf, guess who eats it? Not the agency. The banned account is yours. The screenshot making the rounds on r/HailCorporate has your logo on it. You wear it either way, so you might as well own the work.
The best stuff on Reddit comes from people who actually know the product and have talked to actual customers. That knowledge usually lives in your building, not in mine.
Then there's the part nobody likes to say out loud. Narrative control. Reddit rewards the brand willing to write "yeah, we got that wrong, here's what we fixed." That sentence has to come from someone with real authority and real product knowledge. I can tell you it's the right move. I can't be the one who makes it. Not credibly, anyway.

None of this means an agency is useless here. A good one builds your strategy, points you at the right subreddits, trains your people, and waves you off before you step on a landmine. That's most of what I do on this channel. What I won't do is post as you, because the second I do, the thing that made Reddit worth it starts leaking out of the bottle.
You Don't Need a Big Team for This
Here's the part that should make you feel better. This doesn't take a department. It takes intention. And that's exactly why a mid-sized brand can outwork a Fortune 500 here. Community trust doesn't scale with ad spend. Some giant company throwing money at it has no edge on you at all.
Before you commit, plan for three things:
One internal owner, even part-time, with Reddit actually written into their job. The posting and the day-to-day lives with this person.
Time to learn, because the curve is steep and the cost of a misstep is real.
Patience measured in months and years. Account credibility on Reddit does not happen in weeks.
And the owner doesn't have to be senior. They have to be human, curious, and close enough to the product to answer a real question well. A support lead, a product person, a founder who already likes the platform. Any of them beats a slick marketer here.
If you read those three things and realize you can't swing them right now, that's not a failure. That's good information. Better to know on the front end than to spin something up and watch it die quietly in a backlog three months later.
What It Looks Like When It's Working
A brand doing this well isn't posting constantly. They're just around. The owner reads their subreddits most mornings, answers a question now and then with real detail, says who they work for when it's relevant, and jumps in fast when a thread about their category starts to move.
Give it a few quarters and something shifts. The brand stops being a name that only turns up in complaint threads and becomes a name actual users vouch for. That's the balance AI engines read as credible, because it's the real thing instead of a manufactured one.
And it compounds. The brands getting cited as authorities in AI answers today are the ones who started showing up like humans a year or two ago. Nothing replaces that time. No agency fakes that context.
So Here's What I'd Actually Do
Reddit is one of the rare channels where the right answer is to do more of the work yourself, not less. It rewards real people who know their stuff and it punishes anyone who sounds hired.
If you do one thing this week, do this. Figure out who on your team would own Reddit engagement if you committed to it. Not the campaign. The relationship. Picture that person reading three subreddits over coffee and answering a question here and there like the expert they already are.
If you can see that person clearly, you're most of the way there.
If you can't, that's worth knowing too. And it's honestly the kind of thing I'd rather help you sort out before you spend a dime than after.
